How to Convert an M&T Bank PDF Statement to CSV or Excel
M&T documents its statement layout better than almost any US bank, and its export formats not at all. That is a deliberate choice on their part.
Seven years, and a deliberate silence about formats
M&T publishes a great deal about statements and almost nothing about getting data out, and the second part is a choice rather than an omission. From its Digital Services Agreement:
"You may export account information for use with your personal financial management software (e.g., Quicken) or other spreadsheet software (e.g., Microsoft Excel) for recent transaction history… We reserve the right to change the file format or formats available for download on the M&T Online Banking services at any time, without notice."
That is affirmative evidence that M&T does not commit to named formats. Quicken and Excel appear as destination software, not as file types. Nor does M&T define "recent" — there is no published export date range anywhere.
Three published M&T numbers get mistaken for export limits and are not: 90 days for mobile transaction search, 90 days for mobile deposit history, and 250 statements for a Treasury Center bulk PDF zip, which is a commercial statement-download limit rather than anything to do with transactions.
Statement retention is unambiguous by contrast: seven years across checking, savings, CDs, credit cards, installment loans, lines of credit, mortgages and home equity accounts, with no product-by-product variation published.
Quick answer: M&T keeps seven years in Statements and Notices and downloads statements as PDF. Pull them and convert them — M&T's own agreement recommends you save copies, and warns documents disappear once an account is closed.
The best-documented layout of any US bank here
M&T publishes current annotated statement samples, from a late-2025 redesign. The personal account activity table runs:
| Posting Date | Transaction Description | Serial Number | Deposits & Other Credits (+) | Checks & Other Debits (−) | Daily Balance | Ledger Balance |
|---|
Four things follow, and one of them is genuinely unusual:
- Rows carry a full four-digit year — 09/20/2025, 10/03/2025. This is the opposite of KeyBank, Regions and Huntington, which all print bare MM/DD and hide the year in the header. It removes the single most common silent misdating error.
- Separate debit and credit columns, amounts unsigned, with the sign carried by the (+) and (−) headers rather than the numbers. Xero's bank import rejects this shape outright, so it needs collapsing to one signed column before it will load.
- Two running balances — Daily Balance and Ledger Balance. M&T defines Daily as available and real-time including pending, Ledger as end of previous business day and posted only. They will differ, and neither is wrong.
- Serial Number holds the cheque number, and transactions are a single chronological table rather than grouped into Deposits and Withdrawals sections.
One trap inside the same document: the separate Checks Paid Summary block prints dates with a two-digit year (10/20/25) while the activity table uses four. Two date formats in one statement, and anything assuming a single convention will misread one of them.
Business statements differ again: no Serial Number, no Ledger Balance, an added count of deposits and cheques paid, and a header period using two-digit years where the personal header spells the month out.
This describes the redesign. Statements in your seven-year archive from before roughly late 2025 use a different, undocumented layout. A multi-year M&T conversion therefore spans two formats, which is exactly the case where reading the page beats matching a template.
Converting the statements (4 steps)
- Open Statements and Notices
M&T states electronic documents are available at the website for 7 years in the Statements and Notices service while you are enrolled. - Download the PDFs
M&T states statements are downloaded in PDF format. - Save them, as M&T recommends
M&T's own agreement recommends you print and/or save copies, and notes documents are unavailable once an account is closed. - Convert them
Go to reconcileiq.com/bank-statement-converter, upload the statements, and download clean CSV.

What comes out
The converter collapses M&T's separate Deposits and Checks columns into one correctly signed amount column, which is what Xero requires, and keeps the Daily Balance separate rather than summing it. Where both Daily and Ledger balances appear, the posted Ledger figure is the one that reconciles against the statement totals.
The Checks Paid Summary block is read as a summary rather than as transactions, so its two-digit dates do not produce phantom rows in a different year.

Seven years, across products. M&T states storage of up to 7 years for checking, savings, CDs, credit cards, installment loans, lines of credit, mortgages and home equity accounts, with its Digital Services Agreement confirming documents are available for 7 years in the Statements and Notices service as long as you are enrolled and receiving documents electronically.
M&T names none, and says so deliberately. Its agreement states that you may export account information for use with personal financial management software or spreadsheet software for recent transaction history, and then that it reserves the right to change the file format or formats available for download at any time, without notice. Quicken and Microsoft Excel are named as destination software, not as formats.
M&T publishes current annotated samples. Personal account activity columns run Posting Date, Transaction Description, Serial Number, Deposits and Other Credits (+), Checks and Other Debits (-), Daily Balance, Ledger Balance. Notably the transaction rows carry a full four-digit year, which is the opposite of most US banks, and there are separate debit and credit columns plus two running balances.
Not in M&T Online Banking. M&T states that historical People's United electronic statements and notices for current or closed accounts will not be available, and that documents are available beginning with the first statement or notice after 6 September 2022. So a legacy People's United archive starts in September 2022 and does not stretch back seven years.
Your first statement of up to 10 pages converts free on a new account. After that it runs on credits, with the cost shown before anything is processed. Files are uploaded and processed on our servers rather than in your browser, which is what allows scanned and photographed statements to work as well as native PDFs.
