How to Convert a Citizens Bank PDF Statement to CSV or Excel
Citizens gives you eighteen months and a Document Center. The seven-year figure people quote belongs to something else entirely.
Eighteen months, and the Document Center
Citizens is straightforward about the main number:
"Up to 18 months of your statements are available online and can be retrieved immediately in Online Banking under the DOCUMENT CENTER tab… If you wish to order a statement older than 18 months, simply click on the Contact Us link."
Citizens adds a line that is effectively an instruction: statements "can be saved or downloaded any time for longer storage needs". The bank is telling you its window is not an archive. Eighteen months in, a statement stops being self-service and becomes a request.
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Statements online | 18 months |
| Transaction history | 18 months (12 months statement activity for personal cards) |
| Tax forms | 7 years from year of origination |
Quick answer: pull statements from the Document Center inside the 18-month window and convert them. After 18 months it becomes a phone call.
Two things that produce wrong answers about Citizens
The name. Several unrelated US banks trade as Citizens. A widely repeated claim that Citizens keeps seven years of statements against 18 months online traces to citizensbankandtrust.com — a different institution. The Rhode Island-headquartered Citizens Financial Group, which is the one most people mean, publishes seven years only for tax forms.
The export. Citizens documents an Export icon on the account summary page and a Download Account Data button on the account history page, then offers three destinations: Quicken, Quicken for Mac and QuickBooks. No CSV, Excel, OFX or QIF appears in any Citizens documentation. That is verified absence of documentation rather than proof the option is missing, and no published export date range exists either — so do not assume the 18-month statement figure caps the export.
One more, for anyone with legacy HSBC accounts: Citizens states that HSBC transaction history and account statements will not be available in Citizens Online Banking following the 2022 east-coast branch conversion. If you are chasing pre-conversion HSBC history through Citizens, it is not there.
Converting the statements (4 steps)
- Open the Document Center
In Online Banking, use the DOCUMENT CENTER tab and filter by account and timeframe. - Download within the 18-month window
Citizens states statements older than 18 months must be ordered via Contact Us. - Save them for longer storage
Citizens itself notes statements can be saved or downloaded any time for longer storage needs. - Convert them
Go to reconcileiq.com/bank-statement-converter, upload the statements, and download clean CSV.

What comes out
Citizens publishes no statement-reading guide and no annotated sample for deposit accounts, so this page does not describe its column structure. Be wary of the "Citizens Bank statement sample" results that dominate image search: they are template-mill uploads, not bank documents, and building a parsing expectation on them is worse than having none.
The converter returns a consistent shape regardless: one normalised sortable date column, descriptions rejoined, one correctly signed amount column, and the running balance kept separate.

Eighteen months. Citizens states that up to 18 months of statements are available online and can be retrieved immediately in Online Banking under the Document Center tab, and that to order a statement older than 18 months you click Contact Us. It covers most deposit, line of credit and loan accounts.
For tax forms only. Citizens states that all tax forms are accessible for seven years from their year of origination. A seven-year figure circulating for Citizens statements traces to citizensbankandtrust.com, a different and unrelated bank. Several institutions share the Citizens name, which is a persistent source of wrong answers.
Citizens documents an Export button and a Download Account Data button, and names three destinations: Quicken, Quicken for Mac and QuickBooks. No CSV, Excel, OFX or QIF appears anywhere in its documentation. The personal FAQ confirms an export exists and lets you select a format, without saying which formats.
Citizens states you can view up to 18 months of transaction history, with a parenthetical of 12 months of statement activity for personal credit cards. That parenthetical is genuinely ambiguous in Citizens' own wording, since it sits under a transaction-history heading but refers to statement activity, so we are not going to make it cleaner than they do.
Your first statement of up to 10 pages converts free on a new account. After that it runs on credits, with the cost shown before anything is processed. Files are uploaded and processed on our servers rather than in your browser, which is what allows scanned and photographed statements to work as well as native PDFs.
