How to Convert a Citibank PDF Statement to CSV or Excel

Citi documents less about this than any other major US bank. One thing it does document is a seven-day clock that catches people out.

The seven-day window

Citi is the least documented of the major US banks on this subject. It publishes no retention figure for US accounts, no export format list, and no download date range. Most of what circulates online about Citi's limits is invented, and we will come back to that.

But there is one thing Citi states clearly, and it is the single most useful fact on this page because it is a deadline rather than a limit:

"Requested Older Statements are only available for 7 days. Please print or save for your records."

The sequence is: only statements issued after your card was registered for Citi Online appear immediately. Anything older is a request, submitted by year and month. Citi states requests may take 48 to 72 hours to fulfil. Then the produced statement sits there for seven days and goes.

So a Citi statement retrieval is a two-stage job with a clock on the second stage. If you request a year of statements on a Friday, come back the following weekend, and find nothing, that is why. Request them, then download everything the moment it appears.

Quick answer: request older Citi statements early, save every one within the seven-day window, then convert them so you hold the data permanently rather than depending on Citi's window.

What we will not tell you about Citi

An unusual section for a page like this, but it is the honest one.

You will find pages stating confidently that Citi's download stops at 90 days. You will find others stating just as confidently that it stops at 180 days. Both are presented as fact and neither cites Citi. They cannot both be right, and the disagreement is the tell: where those sites match a bank's documentation they are echoing it, and where they supply a precise number the bank never published, they are generating it.

Citi's own US pages render entirely client-side and its retail help material is credit-card oriented. We could not verify a US retention period, a US export format, or a US download range from any Citi source, so this page states none of them.

One line worth flagging specifically, because it looks authoritative: a sentence about downloading up to a year of cash account transactions in CSV, Excel, OFX and XML is genuine Citi copy. It sits on Citi International Personal Bank's European site, serving Jersey clients with UK phone numbers. It does not describe US retail banking and should not be quoted as though it does.

Converting the statements (4 steps)

Two dates on every card row

Citi does describe its credit card statement, and one detail affects how you book the data. Citi states that the transactions section lists each transaction with merchant name, purchase date, posted date and transaction amount.

Two dates per row, and they are frequently different. Which one you use is a real decision rather than a technicality. Posted date is when the balance actually moved, so it is what reconciles against the bank. Purchase date is when the cardholder made the commitment, so it is what expense analysis and period-matching want. Pick one deliberately, apply it consistently, and note which you chose — unpicking a mixed file later is miserable.

What comes out

Citi does not publish an annotated deposit statement sample, so this page will not describe its column structure. The converter returns a consistent shape regardless: one normalised sortable date column, descriptions with wrapped lines rejoined, one correctly signed amount column, and the running balance kept separate.

On card statements, where Citi prints both a purchase date and a posted date, both are read and the output carries one primary date column so the file imports cleanly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far back do Citibank statements go?

Citi does not publish a retention period for US accounts, so this page will not state one. What it does document is the mechanism: only statements issued after your card was registered for Citi Online are immediately available, and older ones must be requested by year and month.

Why did my requested Citi statement disappear?

Because it expired. Citi states that requested older statements are only available for seven days, and advises printing or saving them for your records. If the window passed, the request has to be made again, and Citi states requests may take 48 to 72 hours to fulfil.

Can I export Citi transactions to CSV?

Citi publishes no export format list for US retail banking, so we are not going to state one. You may find a line elsewhere about downloading a year of cash account transactions in CSV, Excel, OFX and XML: that is genuine Citi copy, but it belongs to Citi International Personal Bank in Europe, not US retail, and it should not be applied here.

What is on a Citi credit card statement?

Citi describes the transactions section as giving a detailed breakdown of each transaction including merchant name, purchase date, posted date and transaction amount. Two separate dates therefore appear per row, which matters when you decide which one to book on: posted date is what the balance moves on, purchase date is what the cardholder remembers.

Is the converter free?

Your first statement of up to 10 pages converts free on a new account. After that it runs on credits, with the cost shown before anything is processed. Files are uploaded and processed on our servers rather than in your browser, which is what allows scanned and photographed statements to work as well as native PDFs.
